Titanfall Review
Hey everyone! It's me Cody "Captain" Tassin, here again with another award-worthy review, this time it is the breakout XBOX One game Titanfall! Titanfall is a humble story about giant bad ass robots (or mechs) that the player is able to pilot in order to annihilate his/her enemies. I found that Titanfall took, what I believe to be an overdone type of multi-player, and added new elements that make the game both refreshing and entertaining. One of those elements happens to be giant bad ass robots, but that is neither here nor there. Titanfall adds depth to a genre that in recent years, has lead me to believe did not exist, but is not exactly perfect, and this review will explain exactly what I mean by that.
By far the most interesting and surprising part of Titanfall, that I really enjoyed, is how much the terrain plays a part in the gameplay. While certain shooter/combat genres (which will not be named) seem to let you play only in a horizontal sense, Titanfall's gameplay and terrain, allow you to incorporate a more vertical style of destroying your foes such as a double-jump, and wall-run. Losing your Titan during combat allows you also to eject high into the air, giving you a chance to scope out the landscape, and maybe gain a tactical advantage against your opponents. Although, there are no Titans that are airborne-capable yet (wink wink EA and Respawn Entertainment), playing as a pilot allows all kinds of possibilities and avenues on which you can achieve your objectives. Unfortunately for now, there are only a few types of gameplay (Attrition, Last Titan Standing, Hardpoint etc.) I can only hope that new DLC will introduce even more depth to an already deep game.
Titanfall isn't without faults; however, as the Campaign mode is severely lacking in an actual story that could help spawn a new sci-fi/action universe that could define not only the XBOX One, but the next-gen consoles as a whole. First off, the Campaign mode is strictly multi-player, as you face off against other online players in an attempt to accomplish..... something, I never really understood what it was exactly. There does appear to be some kind of story amongst the chaos and the bloodshed as the Campaign progresses, but it feels really difficult to take it in as you worry about more experienced Titanfall players cloaking themselves and snapping your neck from behind. The potential for Titanfall to have a mythology that can overcome generational obstacles is definitely there, but it feels poorly executed, and clouded. Also, WHEN IS KICKING PEOPLE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN BULLETS!?!?!?
Titanfall is frankly a breath of fresh air, compared to many of its "competitors." The different dimensions it brings to a genre that is over-saturated with "more of the same" has made it keep pace with all the hype that came before its release. I highly recommend Titanfall to all XBOX One owners, as I think it has easily become the best game for the system to this point of the year (until Destiny is released). As for the PS4 and PC users out there, you should wait with impatience until Titanfall reaches you. And for the Wii-U only players out there why are you reading this?
Final Diagnosis: Titanfall gets 8.5 trampled AI bots out of 10.
