Nintendo sold about 5.7 million of its new Amiibo figurines worldwide

According to a new financial report from Bloomberg Business, Nintendo has managed to sell quite the number of Amiibo figures since its launch late last year.

President Iwata stated during a briefing in Osaka today that Nintendo sold about 5.7 million of its new Amiibo figurines worldwide since late November 2014. Such strong sales for the figurines are an excellent indicator for the future success of these smart toys.

Support is ending for 3 apps on the PlayStation Vita!

Support is ending for two apps on the PlayStation Vita and a third will effectively be killed off by a firmware update in April.

Sony already has removed the YouTube app from the Vita's PlayStation Store. The Vita will no longer support the app beginning April 20, though users who have it on their Vita may continue to use it.

Maps, however, will be stripped out of Vitas with a firmware update in March, and its removal means Near, the system's little-used social networking vehicle, will lose its functionality altogether.

Users may still view YouTube videos or use a map service through the Vita's web browser.

Near was intended to be a social networking app that allowed users to see who nearby was playing the same game. Users also could leave virtual "game goods" at real world coordinates for others to pick up and use in games.

Sony gave no reason for the removal of the two apps and the end of Near's functions. There is more information at FAQ pages for YouTube and Maps/Near.

Spotify coming to PlayStation?!

Spotify and PlayStation are teaming up to deliver a new service called PlayStation Music, which will come to PlayStation Network this spring.

The new service will close down PlayStation's old offering, Music Unlimited, on March 29. PlayStation users may then link their accounts to Spotify and play its free, ad-supported streaming music or its $10-per-month premium service that runs ad-free and is playable offline.

Eric Lempel, the vice president for Sony Network Entertainment, announced the partnership on PlayStation blog, mentioning that Spotify's music will be playable in the background of other gaming sessions. More features will be announced later.

The service will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and Sony's Xperia smartphones and tablets. No mention was made of PlayStation Vita.

Music Unlimited currently is available in 19 countries, and it will shut down March 29. "Nearly all" of those 19 countries will be in the 41 markets where PlayStation Music will launch. A specific launch date was not given; Lempel said it would happen "this spring."

Current Music Unlimited subscribers will receive a free month of access from Feb. 28 to March 29.

Minecraft Hologram Windows 10

Xbox One games will stream to any Windows 10 PC or tablet

Windows 10 and Xbox One will interact in a variety of ways, including streaming Xbox One games to the Windows 10 PCs and tablets in your home, according to announcements made by Head of Xbox Phil Spencer at today's Microsoft event. In a live demo, Forza Horizon 2 streamed from an Xbox One to a Microsoft Surface. Streaming will require a one time set up to establish a relationship between the devices, after which Xbox One games can be accessed on a Windows 10 device by clicking on the game's name in the Windows 10 Xbox App.

Spencer also noted that some Xbox One games' multiplayer modes will connect with Windows 10 devices. "We think enabling people to play multiplayer games on Windows 10, across Xbox One and Windows 10 will unlock the potential of Xbox Live."

Windows 10 is coming to Xbox One

We've already seen how the Xbox app (and Xbox One streaming) is coming to Windows 10, and now we get to reverse that. Microsoft's gaming chief Phil Spencer just announced that Windows 10 is coming to Xbox One. "For developers that want to bring their application over the TV screen this is going to make it very easy for them to do so."

Aside from jokes about using Excel on a game console — which is to say, no Microsoft isn't planning that — not much else was discussed here (we're cautiously optimistic that we'll learn more at the annual Game Developers Conference in March). At today's event, Microsoft also announced a new Xbox app for Windows 10 and, more importantly, Xbox One streaming to Windows 10 devices.

A new Battletoads game coming?!

A new Battletoads game coming?!

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer hinted yet again at the announcement of a new Battletoads during today's Windows 10 event. Spencer, known for wearing t-shirts promoting upcoming Xbox games, sported a green tee with a large Battletoads logo, though he never mentioned the game by name. Microsoft filed for the Battletoads trademark in November of last year.

The original Battletoads, created by Rare, was a beat 'em up released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. Microsoft acquired Rare in 2003, along with many of its properties. Spencer himself has mentioned his fandom for the franchise, though a new Battletoads hasn't been released in over two decades.

Windows Holographic coming soon Play Minecraft in real life!

Microsoft has just revealed its next great innovation: Windows Holographic! It's an augmented reality experience that employs a headset, much like all the VR goggles that are currently rising in popularity, but Microsoft's solution adds holograms to the world around you. The HoloLens headset is described as "the most advanced holographic computer the world has ever seen."

The Elder Scrolls Online console edition has a release date

The Elder Scrolls online will be released on June 9th for XBox One and PS4.

The Elder Scrolls Online publisher Bethesda Softworks is transitioning the subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game to a subscription-free model, the company announced today.

Bethesda will relaunch the existing Mac and Windows PC game as The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on March 17. The long-awaited, twice-delayed console version will be released June 9 on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, one year after its originally announced release window. Bethesda delayed the console version by six months in May 2014, and pushed it back to 2015 last month.

All current Elder Scrolls Online PC accounts, open or closed, will be updated to Tamriel Unlimited upon its launch in March. New players will be able to make a one-time purchase and "play, without restrictions, for as long as they like," said Bethesda in a press release. The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios will continue to support the game with "regular updates and new gameplay" for no additional cost, and will also develop optional paid downloadable content. We've reached out to Bethesda to ask how much the initial purchase will cost, and will update this article with any information we receive.

Players who currently subscribe to The Elder Scrolls Online, which costs $14.99 per month, will be automatically upgraded to "ESO Plus" accounts when Tamriel Unlimited launches. ESO Plus is a premium membership for Tamriel Unlimited, and players who wish to pay for it will receive "exclusive in-game bonuses" and access to all DLC packs. ESO Plus members will also get a monthly drop of Crowns, the new in-game currency that is debuting in The Elder Scrolls Online for the subscription-free version. Crowns can be spent in the new Crown Store on customization and convenience items.

"Our fans are our biggest inspiration, and we've listened to their feedback on the entertainment experience they want," said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online.

ZeniMax Online Studios will provide more details on The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited during a Twitch livestreambeginning at noon ET today. For more, watch the seven-minute cinematic trailer, "The Confrontation," above.

Splatoon launching in May on Wii U

Splatoon, the colorful ink-based third-person shooter from Nintendo, will be released this May on Wii U in North America, the company announced today during its first Nintendo Direct presentation of 2015.

During today's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen showed off some new elements of Splatoon. The game offers a hub world in which players can interact with other people's "inklings," or avatars. A tower in the hub world allows players to start playing online multiplayer matches, which provide in-game currency that players can use to purchase weapons and apparel. In addition to providing visual customization, those items bear buffs that affect inklings' abilities in battle. Trinen confirmed that Splatoonwill be available at retail and on the Wii U eShop.

Nintendo revealed Splatoon at E3 2014, and said last November that the game would be released during the second quarter of 2015. The four-on-four shooter gives each player an "inkgun," which is used to spray the environment with ink and take down opponents. In addition, players can swim through the paint that's coating the world — as long as it's of the same color as their team

The upcoming release will be compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS, and will feature gameplay that will use the device's C stick, allowing for more precise control.

Tekken director is making a new game exclusively for the Wii U..

Buried in the middle of today's absolutely packed Nintendo Direct was a tease for an upcoming game from Bandai Namco's Katsuhiro Harada.

Tentatively titled "Project Treasure" we don't really know much beyond what Harada had to say today about the game.

"We've started a new project that is exclusive to the Wii U," said Harada, who is the game director for fighting series Tekken. "It's an action game where four players work together to complete varied stages. The basic aim is to clear traps, route enemies and seize treasures.

"The game itself is free to download from Nintendo eShop and start playing. Any Nintendo Network user can play, as long as their Wii U is connected to the internet. I can't announce the game's name or launch date yet, but its tentative name is 'Project Treasure,' and we're working very hard on it.

"I hope you'll look forward to it."

The segment ended with the words "coming soon," further updates are expected from Bandai Namco.

Hyrule Warriors DLC..

Hyrule Warriors, the Dynasty Warriors-The Legend of Zelda mashup, will add Majora's Mask-themed characters Tingle and Young Link with new DLC, Nintendo announced today during a Direct presentation.

The Majora's Mask pack also includes a new adventure mode map and three new costumes. It will be available Feb. 5.

You'll have to delete your Super Smash Bros. amiibo data if you want to use them in Mario Party 10

During today's Nintendo Direct, Bill Trinen walked viewers through some of the neat amiibo-powered features coming to Mario Party 10 when it hits the Wii U on March 20.

But those features don't come without a painful cost.

"If you decide to use your Super Smash Brothers amiibo in Mario Party 10," Trinen said, "you will need to erase that figure's Smash Brothers amiibo data."

Mario Party 10 will support nine amiibo: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Rosalina, Donkey Kong and Wario.

What is Cubot the Complexity of Simplicity?!

"At first sight, Cubot is a 3D puzzle-game with a minimalist gameplay, just move color cubes towards tiles of the same color. It's really ease, but an important point in the gameplay is if you have multiple cubes, they move simultaneously! It will be a torture for your mind to complete all levels".

This is just the first couple of levels and I will be doing more later on with commentary.

New Grand Theft Auto Game?!

Portland's scenic city, gun stores and plentiful strip clubs would make for a — well, actually, pretty OK setting for the next Grand Theft Auto game, according to a blogpost from Willie Clark over at Movoto Real Estate.

Just by the numbers, Clark argues that its six police stations, nine gun stores, 81 strip clubs and 637 coffee shops provide more than enough local flavor to make a great playground for a new Grand Theft Auto. Compare this to Los Santos of Grand Theft Auto 5, for which Clark says there are 10 coffee shops, 11 gun stores and 12 police stations.

"Portland would be the PERFECT city for the next Grand Theft Auto game," Clark writes. "It has the personality, the intrigue, and frankly it might be more fun to visit Portland digitally and not risk running into all of those old college friends who are trying to make the rest of the world move there."

You can check out the full post — which includes a detailed map — for more on how Portland might make a cozy home for a new GTA game. Last year, Movoto also gave us a price estimate on Princess Peach's sweet home castle. Hint: It wasn't cheap.

eSports scholarships?!

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) recently joined the list of just two American colleges that recognize League of Legends as a varsity sport, the first being Robert Morris University in Chicago.

A private liberal arts university from Kentucky, UPIKE will also start offering eSports scholarships to qualifying League of Legends players and prospective students this fall, reports WYMT. There are 20 scholarships available.

Just like other athletic scholarships, students eligible for the eSports scholarship will need to maintain a specific GPA, and participate in practice sessions.

"It will be a regime a lot like athletics," said UPIKE's New Media director, Bruce Parsons. "What makes a good League of Legends player and eSports player also makes a good student."

UPIKE graduate Eric VanHoose plans to coach the school's League of Legendsteam, who will be competing in the Collegiate StarLeague starting this fall.
