“special announcement” at Gamescom says Blizzard

Blizzard is teasing a “special announcement” at Gamescom. In an invitation sent to press today, Blizzard teased, “We're making a special announcement that’s sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells and all the shadowed places that lie between.” The description seems to be hinting at Diablo-related news, and could mean we’ll finally see the reveal of the Diablo III expansion that Blizzard confirmed last year. Gamescom will run from August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany, with Blizzard’s press conference set for August 21st. Be sure to check back to "The Gamers Talk" in August for all the news from the show as it’s announced.

The Last of Us DLC Details Coming Soon

Naughty Dog has delivered word that the first real details on the upcoming downloadable content for The Last of Us will be coming soon. In a Reddit Ask Me Anything, game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann were repeatedly asked for details on the highly anticipated DLC. While neither of the two were willing to offer up any specifics on what the DLC may entail, Druckmann did state, "News is on the way about the first DLC drop. Should hear about it this month," presumably referring to some point in August. Straley reiterated what we already knew from the announcement of The Last of Us Season Pass, which is that there are plans for one single-player story DLC and two multiplayer DLC releases. The latter seems likely to center around new maps, but it's anyone's guess as to when the single-player DLC will be set or which characters it will include, although Druckmann did concede that some characters from the game will be returning. When asked if there will ever be any additional story content centering around Joel and Ellie, the game's two protagonists, Druckmann said, "It's possible. We're playing with some ideas, but no direction has been set yet for the next game." This shouldn't be taken as confirmation of a second Last of Us being developed, as it was made clear several times that, at least publicly, Naughty Dog is undecided on what game the Last of Us team will be working on next. To date, the only DLC available for The Last of Us has come in the form of pre-order bonuses and content included with special editions of the game consisting of extra skins, bonuses for multiplayer, and early access to upgrades in the single-player mode.

Free Xbox games

Have an Xbox with a gold live?! well if you do here some free games you can download Crackdown kicks off August's Games With Gold promotion this month, and will be free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers from August 1-15. Crackdown's open world, super-hero-esque powers, and alluring collectibles made it one of the most interesting and entertaining surprises on Xbox 360 when it released in 2007. On August 16, both Dead Rising 2 and its downloadable prequel episode, Case Zero, will be free for Gold members. Case Zero only lasts a few hours, but it's a great little story setup and introduction to the main game's excellent crafting system, impressive open world, and absurd sense of humor. Remember, you only need to initiate the download to add these games to your library forever, so even if you're not going to play them right away, it can't hurt to grab them for later.

XCOM:Enemy Within?!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown fans may soon find themselves with new content to play according to an online listing for something called XCOM: Enemy Within. Three listings for the new title have appeared on South Korea's Game Rating Board website, each for a different platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Entries for encrypted Enemy Unknown files containing the phrase "XCOM EW" can also be found on SteamDB, a website that tracks content found on the Steam network. Unfortunately, these listings lack any details and therefore provide no indication of what Enemy Within is -- it could be a sequel to Enemy Unknown or, more likely, it could be an expansion for it. That more XCOM is on the way comes as no real surprise. Alongside the announcement of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch versions of Enemy Unknown at PAX East in March, Firaxis teased that something new was in the works. A short video clip was shown of The Council, which you report to in Enemy Unknown, informing you of a "new threat." No further details have been provided since that time. Between the listings on SteamDB's Enemy Unknown page and the fact that it was less than a year ago that Enemy Unknown was released, an expansion would make sense. Such a release would fall in line with publisher 2K Games' approach with many of its other recent games, including BioShock Infinite, Civilization V, and Borderlands 2, all of which have or are continuing to see a great deal of post-launch support in the form of expansion packs and DLC releases. Would you prefer to see Enemy Within released as an expansion or a sequel? What would you like to see in such a release? Let us know in the comments.

TheGamersTalk Videocast update july 30th

Take-Two Files New Bully Trademark

Take-Two has filed a new trademark for its open-world classic Bully (aka Canis Canem Edit) which covers "video game programs and software," among other things.
The trademark application, sent on July 25th, will protect "computer and video game programs and software; downloadable digital materials, namely, wallpapers, screensavers, digital music files, and graphics, videos, films, multimedia files, live action programs, motion pictures, and animation in the field of video games and computer games."

While this could just be Take-Two protecting its brand, it opens the door for speculation on a possible sequel to the original, which was developed by  Rockstar Vancouver (since disbanded) and first released on the PlayStation 2 back in 2006.
Earlier today, Take-Two revealed it's anticipating its most successful fiscal year ever, expecting to pull in nearly $2 billion from its various properties by March 2014.

Assassins Creed IV news

At E3 2013, Ubisoft revealed that PlayStation owners who purchase Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, whether on PS3 or PS4, will gain access to three exclusive missions starring Aveline de Grandpré. You may remember her as the star of PlayStation Vita's Assassin's Creed III: Liberation. Here are your first images of her in action, courtesy Ubisoft:

Assassin's Creed IV writer Darby McDevitt explains that Aveline's content is "not directly related to the end of her story. If Assassin’s Creed IV is like a novel, Aveline’s missions are like a short story.” Assassin's Creed III: Liberation's writer, Jill Murray, will write the brief epilogue, which is set many years after the end of the Vita spinoff. She still uses her trusty blow darts, and her double flintlock-pistols suggest she, like Edward Kenway, has picked up on the value of dual-wielding weapons.
McDevitt explains that this is possible due to the features of the infamous Animus device, which allows characters to retrieve the memories of historical people. Who knows? Maybe we'll see the new assassin from the upcoming Brahman comic appear. We already know Black Flag will have DLC with yet another new assassin.

So tell us what you think, Will you buy the a PlayStation version to see more of Aveline?

300GB disc?!

Right now, a dual layer Blu-ray disc is capable of holding about 50GB of data. And while the next generation of video game consoles will both feature Blu-ray compatibility, it seems Sony isn't satisfied with the current technology's limitations. As mentioned by CNET, Sony has teamed up with Panasonic to create a new optical disc capable of storing up to 300GB of information.

Panasonic released a statement on the collaboration, with the tech companies working jointly to create a new disc standard by the end of 2015. The 300GB optical discs are geared toward professional use (obviously), with the new storage capacity offering unique advantages to archivists and video editors, for example. Both Sony and Panasonic have previously released storage options which combine multiple optical discs into one cohesive drive.
So, how could this new technology appeal to gamers? Well, that's not immediately clear. Sony could very well release the new discs under a Blu-ray moniker, or attempt to make the discs compatible with the PlayStation 4. Realistically, the discs would likely prove cost prohibitive and unnecessary for storing game data. But whereas today's triple-A games may only require around 15GB of information, advancements in technology could mean significantly larger file sizes in just a matter of years.
And when internet service providers are capping your bandwidth, you just might need a trusty old optical disc after all.

Batman Vs Superman where is it going to be filmed?!

Man of Steel was shot largely in Vancouver, but that's not where its sequel -- possibly titled Batman vs. Superman or Superman vs. Batman -- will be filmed.
VanCityBuzz reports that the Warner Bros. sequel will lens in Toronto instead because their tax incentives for the film industry are better than those offered by British Columbia.

Henry Cavill is set to reprise his role as Superman. Also returning are director Zack Snyder, writer David S. Goyer, and cast members Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne. The role of Batman has yet to be cast. The sequel is slated for a 2015 release.

Kingdom Hearts III won't be the last game in the series

Kingdom Hearts III won't be the last game in the series, according to the franchise's creator.

Speaking with the LA Times, Tetsuya Nomura rejected the description of Kingdom Hearts as a "trilogy", not just because of past spin-offs like Dream Drop Distance and 358/2 Days, but also because the series will continue on beyond the release of Kingdom Hearts III.

"There was never a plan," he said. "As a core game, this is finally the third, and 10 years have passed. I couldn’t call this a trilogy. There have been so many spinoffs. In ‘Kingdom Hearts 3,’ the battles that the characters have been fighting for the past 10 years will come to a conclusion. That is the plan. But the series will continue. Only the particular enemy they have been fighting the past 10 years will come to an end."

Fez 2 is no more.

Phil Fish has announced that production has ceased on Fez II.
The news broke on Fish's personal Twitter account, where the developer wrote: "im done. FEZ II is canceled. goodbye."

This was followed shortly by a more formal statement made via the official Polytron account (the company co-founded by Fish in 2008):

"It's with a heavy heart that we announce that FEZ II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologize for the disappointment"
— Polytron (@Polytron) July 27, 2013

It's currently unclear why production has ceased on the very recently-announced game (we only found out about Fez II last month). But the announcement was made in the wake of a very public spat Fish was having over Twitter. We're refraining from re-posting these Tweets here, since the argument has not been cited as the reason behind the game's cancellation.
In fact, in a new blogpost, Fish says the decision can not be attributed to a single reason and was due more to a cumulative effect:

"FEZ II is cancelled. i am done. i take the money and i run. this is as much as i can stomach. this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign. you win."

After thought, it's a real  bummer to heir that after how fun and amazing Fez was, so here's hopping that maybe things will work out and we all will get to play Fez 2.

Kanye West 3030 the game!

Kanye West is the star of his very own Japanese role-playing game, titled Kanye Quest 3030.

Based in the heart of a virtual futuristic city, the 2D game features guest appearances from Tupac Shakur, Nicki Minaj and Jay-Z, while the end-of-level boss and "god-like dictator" is Lil B, the BasedGod. In order to succeed, West must collect power points by winning rap battles and defeat enemies using croissants as ammunition. If that doesn't sound amazing enough, there are 808s and RPG-mixed West tunes, including a dramatic piano rendition of West's 2010 single Power, to guide you through his journey.

The game is available now, despite no authorisation or affiliation with West,

Kanye Quest 3030 is the latest in a long line of video games incorporating musicians, from 50 Cent's Blood on the Sand to Two Chainz's Live in Color. In 2003, Def Jam released a series of video games, the first of which was titled Def Jam Vendetta and was a wrestling game featuring artists such as DMX, Joe Budden and Ludacris.

Kanye Quest 3030 was created by an independent game developer named Phenix. It is suitable for Windows platforms only.

DOTA 2

There’s an adage that the Dota 2 community often quotes when someone identifies themselves as a new player. “Welcome to Dota 2!” They say, with open arms, before concluding with, “You suck.” They're not wrong: for the first dozen hours or so, you'll be bombarded with too much information and an often unforgiving community of extremely competitive players. But if you persevere, Dota 2 becomes one of the most rewarding and tense team-based multiplayer experiences anywhere in gaming. It's an achievement owed to uncompromising depth, a ridiculously generous free-to-play model, and the great features developer Valve has built up around it.
Valve's artists deserve praise for a crisp and readable style that, after some practice, makes it possible to tell what's going on even in a massive brawl where both teams of five colorful fantasy characters collide and cast spells at once. However, credit for the intimidatingly complex design of Dota 2 belongs to the original Defense of the Ancients mod (known as DOTA) for Warcraft III, which kicked off the MOBA genre. Valve (after hiring on DOTA's key developers) has copied that formula almost to the letter, and as a result Dota 2 has become notorious even among its MOBA peers for its difficulty – and that’s totally justified. It’s a double-edged sword that leads to both a terrifying introduction and a world-class competitive game at the highest levels.
As such, you should not expect to have fun your first day playing... or even your first week. That sounds like a cardinal sin of gaming, but there’s method to this madness. In short, Dota 2 is a deeply layered construct of systems, and to survive you need to understand every single one and how they interact with one another. Everything from learning to work as a member of a coordinated team to the counter-intuitive practice of killing your own AI units to deny the enemy experience points and gold they’d get from doing it themselves, and understanding  the effects  of hundreds of complex abilities like Bloodseeker’s Rupture (which deals huge damage with every step you take) is a big barrier to entry. Even figuring out which of the 102 heroes (and counting) fits you best is a time-consuming challenge.
Initially, you’re thrown into the deep end to flounder, trying out any hero that makes the slightest bit of sense. The selection is bewildering: playing as Riki with his permanent invisibility from level 6 on is an obvious choice, as it's hard to kill what you can't see. Drow Ranger, perhaps, with her obscene damage the instant she unlocks her "ultimate" ability at level 6, and her slowing Ice Arrows that enable both escapes and setting up a kill. On the more complex end of the spectrum you have choices like the armour-manipulating Templar Assassin, or the incredibly mobile Storm Spirit, who can dart around the battlefield and avoid damage by simply not being in the wrong place at the wrong time. On top of that there are well over 100 items to choose from within each game, each with their own ways of manipulating and enhancing your stats and suite of active abilities.
Your learning has just begun when you've settled on what roles, heroes, and builds suit you best – you also have to adapt based on what other players choose. If the other team plays a Riki, you need to compensate with an emphasis on detection. Go up against Bloodseeker and his hideously powerful Rupture will force you to carry around a Town Portal Scroll to get home in a hurry.

Real Jurassic park!

Mr Clive Palmer, a mining tycoon who is already in the progress of building his own Titanic replica that will be complete in 2016, is now in the process of building a dinosaur park on his coastal resort. He applied for permission last year,

and it's now been approved, following locals' concerns that it might lower the place's reputation. (Why on earth they would think that a dinosaur park would lower anything's reputation is beyond me.)

40 dinosaurs have already been delivered and 70 more are on their way, says the Coolum Resort website, all of which can move their limbs and tails and blink and breathe fire (possibly). Some of these robots will be 25 to 30 feet high, and are made in China. "Work is well underway at the site to ensure the dinosaurs blend seamlessly into the natural vegetation and create a realistic prehistoric environment that will be entertaining, informative and educational," it reads.

Resort manager Schoch paints a picture of the park's realism. "The dinosaur park is set among natural surroundings - the trees are real, the rainforest is real. The only things that aren't real are the dinosaurs whereas other places in the world would have everything fake.”

Just as well the dinosaurs aren't real, I suppose. We all know how that turned out. The picture above is of one of the awesom lizards on the way to the park - you can see more at the Palmer Coolum Resort website.
